So, What is

So, What is
      Communi- cations Production
           Design Exactly?

Communications production design is a term used to describe a collection of complimentary visual and literary skills that facilitate the vertically integrated production of communications.

With this in mind, I differentiate myself from traditional communications designers by not working exclusively as a designer by trade. As someone who vertically integrates communications production, I’m also a seasoned writer–and engage in unique processes that marry both literary dexterity and distinguished design into a singular refined product.

While there are many different types of communications production designers, I have found that my skills and capabilities tend to fall into a few key domains of expertise that resonate with clients.

Web Design
        explained

In the modern day and age, owned online properties are so important that regardless of what I’m working on for a given client, at some point or another I can guarantee that I will eventually be working on their website. The primary reason that explains this, is the fact that web sites are among the choice few deliverables a designer can provide, that is not just an extension of their client’s brand, but is also a critical facilitator of that client’s operations. Unlike colors, fonts, logos, and the corresponding assets that they contribute to designing, websites are much more complex tools. They organize clients, disseminate the news, track inventory, manage employees, capture revenue–and so much more.

The stated importance of websites to clients explains why web design is one of my flagship services–and is distinguished by having highly developed processes that allow me to build quality experiences for clients in a way that is scientifically repeatable.

Digital Product Design Explained

Digital Product Design is a term used to describe the research, ideation, and prototyping processes associated with the production of of digital applications.

Like web sites, digital products are tools that are distinguished by their perceived sophistication as complex interactive deliverables. In many cases, they can be internally facing, and increase the operational efficiency of a given business operation. At the same time, digital products can be sold, and lend to more unique opportunities for businesses to monetize operations and increase cash flow.

Though digital product design is not a distinct specialty in the Communications Production Design vertical, it is a space that benefits from the introduction of disciplined communications production designers.

The reason why is because communication production designers know how to effectively streamline the disparate production needs associated with realizing a digital product.

While no, digital products are not conventionally seen as communications, they do share many of the same needs as communications. These can include more foundational things like having finely wrought copy and legible color choices, to more complex things like creating unique object behaviours and establishing robust design systems.

The Unique Needs of Digital Product Design

Unlike every other service in my offering, Digital Product Design is also distinguished by the expectations that I hold for the client as the consultant. The truth of the matter is that without a proper point of reference for what deliverables to expect out of a digital product designer, it can be very easy for clients to enter this process with a set of expectations that–for lack of a better term–are completely out of pocket.

In so many words, the role of a digital product designer is to craft a creative spec for product engineers to code. What it is NOT, is the process of creating a design that product engineers will “code underneath, and turn into an app.”

Intrinsically, this means that in order for you to fully realize the value of my skills in digital product design, you already need to have access to a semi-competent coder–or team of coders–that are comfortable and familiar with coding user interfaces in CSS or React.

Additionally, you need to understand the intrinsic limits of my contributions as a design professional, and they do not include coding the app. While you are more than welcome to have an application prototyped so that it can be handed off at a future date to a coding team, understand the place where my responsibilities reside in all of this.

Finally, digital product design is a time-intensive process. So much so, that it would be unreasonable to expect a fully-fleshed out application experience in any frame of time less than several months. If you have other, more pressing design needs and a limited budget runway, I recommend that we get to those first before opting to focus on this.

So, in Essence, UI/UX?

The truth of the matter is that UI/UX encompasses more than just the creation of apps.

While UI/UX design avowedly includes the deign of applications, it can also include the creation of web sites–as well as experiences that are exclusive to the physical space.

By making a distinction that I focus on Digital Products and Websites, I am communicating to you what corridors of the UI/UX discipline my skills inhabit–and I am doing this to communicate what things I do and do not feel comfortable providing my creative counsel in.

Marketing
    Design Explained

Marketing design focuses on the processes surrounding the visual production of promotional communciations. Conventionally speaking, businesses and organizations of all strokes stand to benefit from quality marketing communications, and for such reasons, it should be of little surprise that Marketing Design is perhaps one of the oldest disciplines in the design profession. Despite taking it’s age into account, Marketing Design has still managed to evolve in meaningful ways, and to this day, is perhaps the most common type of design that businesses request–and need–on a consistent basis.
