SHORTCUT

If you are busy with multiple portfolio reviews, then let's not waste any of your precious time. Skip the background story and jump straight into the details of the assignment -- starting with the company background.

Downtown Boxing Gym is a community-driven, non-profit organization that specializes in providing impoverished Detroit youth with an after-school program replete with tutoring, athletic coaching, and college counseling. Open to children from as young as 8 to as old as 18, Downtown Boxing Gym has been widely recognized as one of many effective solutions to helping keep kids off the streets, and on a path toward opportunity. I worked with them alongside The Lionfish Company, to help deliver a branded presentation for the organization’s fundraising efforts.

Downtown Boxing Gym is one of the first charity organizations of its kind. Unlike many traditional after-school programs, DBG provides children with not only after-school athletics, but also mentorship, study hours, and tutoring sessions for its attendees. These services are designed to be cost-free, and provide actual enrichment opportunities for kids that would not otherwise have them.

For such reasons, creating a fundraising document that was not only eye-catching, but also able to successfully capture the brand’s personality was very important. I opted for a primarily flat, contemporary design using DBG’s colors, and fleshed it out with the sparing use of 3D cubes and slab serifs to give it all a sporty look.
