New York has a habit of talking back to brands, and this week it’s replying to AI with a fat Sharpie. According to Futurism, a well-funded AI startup dropped roughly a million bucks on a sweeping outdoor ad buy across the city—and New Yorkers promptly defaced it with blunt, unvarnished skepticism. The recurring message, scrawled across posters and kiosks: “AI wouldn’t care if you lived or died.”

It’s a brutal line because it lands. The last 18 months of AI hype have trained people to expect glossy promises at best and predatory bullshit at worst. Everyone’s seen the demo reels. They’ve also seen deepfake porn, voice cloning scams that empty grandma’s checking account, and a conveyor belt of “oops, we scraped that” apologies from AI companies that built products on artists’ work without consent. Dropping a seven-figure Out-of-Home campaign into the middle of all that without addressing any of it is like rolling a robot dog through a union picket line and being surprised it gets kicked.

Beyond the vibes, the backlash tracks with public sentiment. Pew Research has repeatedly found that Americans are more concerned than excited about AI, with “concern” a majority position in 2023 and trending up. Edelman’s 2024 Trust Barometer flagged a broader unease that innovation—AI included—is being poorly managed. Translation: people don’t trust that the folks building this stuff have put real guardrails in place. So when an AI startup buys a citywide megaphone to pitch “the future,” a lot of New Yorkers are going to write their own caption.

If you’ve ever bought media in NYC, you also know the choice of format matters. Subway cards, bus shelters, Times Square screens—they’re conversation starters and, yes, canvases. Subvertising is a local sport. Street artists and activists have been remixing glossy corporate pitches here for decades. That doesn’t mean your ad failed—sometimes the “remix” is the engagement. But if your message sounds like it was workshopped by a room full of founders who haven’t taken the train since 2019, expect the city to pitch in with creative direction.

There’s also a strategic misread here. Consumer anxiety around AI isn’t primarily about whether the chatbot can write a cute haiku. It’s about jobs, consent, privacy, and control. The 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes shoved those concerns into the mainstream: writers and actors weren’t arguing about novelty—they were fighting to prevent their work and literal faces from being automated away. Across industries, employees are asking whether “AI copilots” are helpful or a prelude to layoffs. Regulators are moving too: New York City already requires bias audits for automated hiring tools. Europe’s AI Act is rolling in. None of that context shows up in a feel-good billboard.

If you’re going to light seven figures on fire in Manhattan, here’s what would’ve been smarter than glossy platitudes and blank white space begging to be vandalized:

  • Show receipts on safety. Don’t say “we care”—prove it. Spell out your red-teaming, your content provenance, your opt-out and data deletion flows. If you’re training on licensed data, say with whom and how it’s enforced. If you’re not, say that loudly.
  • Lead with accountability. Commit to watermarking and detection for AI-generated media. Offer indemnification for customers. Publish your model’s known failure modes and the plan to mitigate them.
  • Talk about workers like they’re humans. If your system is augmenting jobs, show a union shop that asked for it and negotiated guardrails. If it’s automating work, show the reskilling budget and guarantees. Otherwise the subtext reads: “efficiency” for you, pink slips for everyone else.
  • Engage the city you’re advertising in. Sponsor digital literacy workshops with local libraries. Fund artist grants with transparent data-licensing terms. Put a hotline on the ad for reporting abuse and actually staff it.

Would that still get tagged? Probably. But the tenor of the responses would shift—from “you don’t care if we live or die” to “okay, at least you know why we’re pissed.” Right now, the earned-media halo you get from a public dust-up is counterbalanced by the brand damage of looking cavalier about real harms. And no, spinning the graffiti as “sparking a conversation” doesn’t make you Socrates; it makes you the guy who forgot to read the room.

There’s a meta-lesson here for AI companies treating brand marketing like a growth hack. We are not in the iPhone summer of 2007. We are in the AI trust winter of 2024, where wild demos coexist with daily headlines about misuse, bias, and corporate overreach. Advertising can lubricate awareness, but it cannot substitute for governance, consent, and clear boundaries. If your product’s core social contract is unresolved, the city will write the contract terms on your ad for you—in black marker, in 72-point all caps.

New Yorkers defacing a million-dollar campaign isn’t just vandalism; it’s feedback. It’s messy, impolite, and deeply on brand for a place that has zero patience for techno-utopian cosplay. If AI companies want different handwriting on their billboards, they’ll have to earn it the old-fashioned way: by building systems that demonstrably care whether the rest of us do, in fact, live or die.
