Almost immediately after the release of the Sony A7SIV in the summer of 2020, Sony camera enthusiasts began to count the days until it would be announced that a potential successor to Sony’s prolific A7III was around the corner.
Well, no such announcement came, and the hype cycle ensued. With it, we saw everything from theoretical specifications, to unconfirmed spec leaks, to straight-up wish lists for what professional photographers and videographers may possibly want out of a potential Sony A7IV.
If I’m being honest, I am a proud user of Sony camera systems, and most of my photographic and video work in the past 2 years has been with the Sony A7III. Like many photographers who use this camera system, I have always liked everything from Sony color science to its 1080p 120 fps slow-motion capabilities, to its increased ISO range compared to higher-end models such as the Sony A7RIII.
But like many photographers and videographers who get an extended chance to use these camera systems, I recognize that they are not perfect—and given the progressively changing standards that accompany media production, one could say that the Sony A7III is getting a little bit old in the mirrorless camera product cycle.
And this is why all eyes are focused on Sony’s upcoming camera event slated for Thursday, October 21st. It is here, with good reason, that many people believe the successor to Sony’s most popular Alpha series camera, the A7III will be announced—and it will undoubtedly be the much talked about Sony A7IV.
Aside from a more-than-year-long hype cycle that has led up to this moment, Sony also kind of dropped the ball with the tag cloud that they put on the YouTube stream that is going to be live on the 21st—as it literally is tagged with About 5 different variations of “Sony A7 IV” on the page—and it also looks like it is going to have a pretty interesting set of potential features such as 5GHz Wifi Support, and maybe even internal support for live streaming?
Ultimately, only time will tell. Until then, mark your calendars for Sony’s Alpha camera event slated for Thursday, October 21st at 10 AM Eastern Standard Time.
